Description of Arterial Assessment (Mapping)

The stretching, dilating or ballooning of an artery called an aneurysm happens when the wall of an artery becomes thinner and therefore weaker. If this occurs in the main blood vessel of the body, its known as an aortic aneurysm. This can occur in the chest cavity (thoracic aortic aneurysm) or more likely, in the abdominal cavity (abdominal aortic aneurysm or AAA).
As these dilations get bigger, they become more liable to rupture or bursting. This is quite often fatal with massive blood loss.
Fortunately, this ultrasound technology can detect such problems and if severe, an operation can be carried out to correct the defect so that a rupture is avoided.
