Ayurvedic medicine is the most well known of all the traditional Indian medicines. It is thought to have originated more than 2000 years ago and originates from texts which cover many fields of medicine including: surgery & pathology, diagnosis, treatment, lifestyle and philosophy. It is thought that this knowledge was passed down from Indra (a Hindu god).

Description of Ayurvedic Medicine
Ayurvedic doctors view the body as a microcosmic universe containing 5 primordial elements which are:
1 ether (akasha);
2 air (vayu);
3 fire (agni);
4 water (jala);
5 earth (prithvi).
These elements combine to form 3 humours (doshas). These are:
1 wind (vata);
2 choler (pitta);
3 phlegm (kapha).
Each of these dosha has a particluar function in relation to the wotking of the body. The relationship between each of these dosha (how they interact with each other) and the balance between them (to which degree each is preseent) determines our own constitution and health. Other factors which also affect an individual's constitution include the strength of their digestive fire and bowel function.
The body is composed of 7 tissues (dhatus) and their waste products (malas). Within the body, fluids and essences circulate through a network of channels. Additional factors which influence health and also mental qualities are the 3 interdependent universal constituents (the gunas). These are:
1 purity (sattva);
2 activity (rajas);
3 solidity (tamas).
An imbalance in any of these constituents caused by changes to lifestyle, mental upset or other external factors may cause disease.
A practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine will usually undertake a physical examination of patients in order to ascertain the degree of imbalance of the 3 doshas. The pulse (nadi), tongue (jihva), voice (sabda), skin (sparsa), vision (drka), appearance (akrti), urine (mutra) and stools (mala) are all examined.
The quality of the pulse taken over the radial artery of the wrist differs for each of the 3 doshas. For example, in a predominantly vata individual the pulse is fast; a pitta pulse is jumpy amd a kapha pusle is slow and steady. Similarly, the general appearance, colour and coating of the tongue also reveals information about the doshas. Dry, rough and cracked tongues are found in vatas; red, with oily yelllow coatings are found in pittas and swollen moist with greasy white coating are found in kapha tongues. In this way, a complete examination reveals much information about imbalances of the dosha. Together with an individual's age, body type, constitution and other information determines suitable treatment for each individual. The role of karma and spirits may also be determined by using astrological charts.
Treatment of an ailment or disease involves restoring the natural balance of the doshas. This is done in several ways and using several types of differing methods. These include the use of herbal medicines, massage, manipulation, advice regarding diet and lifestyles, yoga and techniques for cleansing and detoxification. The practice of Ayurvedic medicine remains very popular in India but it's use in developed countries is increasing. Ayurveda can be used to treat diseases of the digestive system, skin, gynaecological problems, obesity and anxiety symptoms as well as others.
