Chiropractors believe in looking at the body as an entity and as a whole when assessing their patients for their health needs. For example, the malalignment of a single joint may cause pain, inflammation and illness in other parts of the body. They also believe that stress, poor posture and trauma can play a major impact in how the body functions and central to this is the role of the spine. Problems with the spine can manifest in many different ways. Manipulation of the joints of the spine where nerves exit the spinal cord through the spine is a major factor in treating such disorders.

Description of Chiropractic
During the initial assessment the chiropractor will assess the patient's posture, joint mobility and often other factors such as lifestyle. The chiropractor can carry out various tests to determine mobility of various joints such as the hip and may spend some time flexing and extending the joints, testing the reflexes and looking at the patient's general health. Sometimes, this involves taking an x-ray.
It is the restriction of movement or excessive joint mobility, especially in the spine, which is believed to cause swelling or inflammation which subsequently leads to pain.
Before manipulation can take place the therapist will usually try to loosen stiff muscles by massage. Spinal joint manipulation can then take place by sharp and precise thrusting movements (adjustments) by various techniques. These manipulations may cause loud clicking noises and fleeting episodes of discomfort but resolve very quickly and usually result in long term relief from symptoms. "Top up sessions" may be required every few months and advice about posture and lifestyle will also be given as well as about doing exercises at home to maintain a state of good health.
Chiropractic medicine can be useful for the treatment of teh following conditions although this list is not exhaustive:
- asmtha and other breathing problems;
- digestive problems and bowel conditions;
- head aches and migraines;
- joint pain;
- menstrual pain;
- muscle pain;
- sciatica;
- spinal problems including disc injuries and neck problems;
- sports injuries;
- tinnitus;
- vertigo.
In the UK chiropractors are state registered. They therefore play a vital role in many hospitals and clinics especially those involved in treating sports injuries and work along side conventional doctors.
Further information can be obtained through the General Chiropractic Council ("GCC") which operates the Chirppractic Registration Information Service ("ChRIS").
Generally a referral from a GP or family doctor is not required before seeing a chiropractor.
