Description of Complementary Medicine
Some types of complementary medicine have their origins in the recent past from developed countries. and may be quite closely linked to conventional medicine while others have a more ancient origin, with their roots in the mysteries of the East such as Shiatsu and Ayurveda.
The philiosophies behind the complementary approach to treatment range widely. For example, in some therapies there is physical manipulation of the body and the laying of hands whilst others rely on the use of plants and herbs to achieve a therapeutic result. The exact type of therapy used for an individual very much depends on their beliefs and preferences and also on their particular ailment.
Although a consulataion with a doctor in a developed country usually leads to a conventional treatment, increasingly some types of complementary medicine are being recommended such as osteopathy, acupuncture and homeopathy, which are being more readily accepted as legitimate forms of treatment by medical science.
However, it is also clear that more work needs to be done for some types of treatment to make them more scientifically valid and better regulated so that patients can be protected against adverse affects and so that doctors may be more confident in their use.
When using complementary medicines it is important to inform your doctor as it is possible that some of these may interact or interfere with conventional medicines. Furthermore, patients are always advised not to stop their conventional medicines in favour of complemenatary therapies without prior consultation as this may cause serious problems. As with conventional drugs it is possible that herbal remedies may cause side effects and this should be borne in mind. Other techniques such as joint manipulation can also be harmful in untrained hands.
Finding the appropriate therapist is always most important. However, this can prove difficult as there is not always a governing or regulatory authority covering every field of complementary medicine. It is therefore useful to research these therapies before commiting to a particular therapist and these days this can be done by speaking to your doctor, searching the internet, looking through phone books to find local therapists or by personal recommendations. In addition, it is always useful to ask the therapist for his/her training experience and credentials.
Bearing the above points in mind, complementary therapies do have an increasing role in all societies and many patients find them very beneficial either as first line treatment or after exhausting more conventional options.
