The principle of homeopathy is the concept of using "like with like" for treating illnesses. This is done by using very dilute doses of active compounds. In diluting the doses even otherwise poisonous or toxic chemicals can be used without danger to treat symptoms. Examples of this include the use of Belladonna, Arsenic, Deadly Nightshade, Mercury, Sulphur and even snake venom. These remedies can be used in many different forms such as tablets, powders, tinctures, tonics, creams, ointments or solutions.
Homeopathy has gained increasing popularity over the last 20 or so years as it is largely thought to be free from any side effects as the concentrations of the active ingredients used are miniscule.

Description of Homeopathy
Although the precise mechanism by which homeopathic drugs act to cure disease is unknown, the concept of treating like with like ensures that drugs given to treat a disease are the same as those drugs which would normally cause the symptoms of the disease being treated. The only difference would be that the homepathic remedy would contain an incredibly diluted quantity of that drug. In fact, some would say that there was actually no active ingredient what so ever in most homeopathic remedies. An example of this would be Allium Cepa to treat hayfever. The symptoms of hayfever being itchy and watery eyes and a runny nose amongst others but Allium Cepa is made from the extract of onions which in themselves cause stinging and watering of the eyes and a runny nose.
The remedy is thought to induce the body's immune system into starting to treat itself and thus aid the healing process but the remedies may be so dilute as to not contain even a single molecule of the active ingredient. Believers in homeopathy suggest that it is not the presence of the active ingredient but just it's "memory" in the water which is the key to homeopathy and it is the memory that causes the therapeutic effect on the immune system.
The homeopathic therapist will usually ask patients about their symptoms, their past and present state of health, their diet and lifestyle. In this way the therapist can then customise the remedy both to the patient's illness and their personality.
Generally there are two types of homeopaths:
1. "Classical" homeopaths: these practitioners will based on your medical history, personality and symptoms prescribe a unique remedy.
2. "Complex homeopaths": these therapists usually look at the overall disease before presecribing a range of chemicals.
Together with the actual remedy homeopaths usually advise on diet and lifestyle factors. Homeopathy can be used to treat many different conditions as listed below although this list is not exhaustive:
- acne;
- allergies;
- asthma;
- back pain;
- bruising;
- colic;
- cold and flu symptoms;
- cystitis;
- digestive and gut symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome;
- heartburn;
- insect bites;
- leg cramps;
- menopausal symptoms;
- menstrual symptoms;
- nausea - including morning sickness;
- psychological problems such as anxiety and panic attacks;
- skin disorders such as eczema;
- teething pains.
