The concept of osteopathy was born in the 19th Century as a form of medicine without the use of drugs. The main premise behind osteopathy is that bones which are "out of place" might damage blood or nerve supply and thus cause illness. Therefore osteopathy relies up on understanding the mechanics of the body and the relationship between muscles and the skeleton.

Description of Osteopathy
Although osteopaths consider the relationship of muscles, joints and bones in the body they view the body as a whole when treating patients. An example of this includes an exacerbation (flair up) of asthma caused by stiffness of the shoulders and ribs from poor posture or injury or lower back pain caused by an imbalance of the pelvis from a fall.
Flexibility of the spine is therefore very important as tension and inflammation in the spine is thought to be a key factor in upsetting the nervous system. Such problems can arise from having a poor posture. Therefore, if there is an imbalance or misalignment of one group of muscles,joints and bones then this can affect other areas of the body which may seem distant to the source of the problem such as the brain, the digestive system, the circulation and the lymphatic system.
The initial consulation will involve the osteopath taking a note of the patient's symptoms and medical history and also looking at the patient's occupation and lifestyle before beginning to examine the patient's posture, mobility and flexibility of joints and the relationships between various parts of the body to each other. Once done, the osteopath can then concentrate on specific problem areas such as tender points of inflammation, stiffness, reduced mobility and misalignment. The practitioner can use various techniques to manipulate these areas such as massage, muscle stretching and "thrust" mobilisation techniques where a gentle force is applied to a problem joint such as in the spine so that it is realigned, thus alleviating the problem. These thrust techniques can cause loud clicking noises but are usually not painful.
More than one session may be required but the osteopath will usually advise on posture, exercise and lifestyle changes to help overcome a painful problem and to prevent further episodes.
Osteopathy can be used to treat many problems as listed below. However, this listed is not exhaustive:
- arthritis;
- asthma and other respiratory problems;
- back pain including in pregnancy;

Many scientific trials have been carried out showing a psoitive benefit from osteopathy in treating several conditions especially back pain. In the UK all osteopaths are registered with The General Council of Osteopaths and further information can be obtained from the Council.
