Description of Iontophoresis (For sweating)

This process entails passing a small electrical current through an electrolyte solution (which can be tap water or a different compound), which is in contact with the skin.
It is thought that the passage of ions into the skin stops sweat production from the sweat glands.
For treatment of sweating of palms and soles, hands or feet can be bathed into the solution. But treating other areas such as armpits (axilla) is more difficult as the electrical current has to be passed through special pads soaked in the solution and then applied to the skin.
This process takes 30-40 minutes with tap water for each area and should be repeated for a minimum of 4 consecutive days.

This process is usually done in hospital but home treatment kits that use tap water are available.
Iontophoresis should NOT be used through pregnancy or those with a cardiac pacemaker or metal implant.
Side effects are uncommon and minor, but include mild discomfort, a rash and scaling of the skin at the treatment site.
