The dentist will isolate the teeth and gums by using rubber dam (a rubber sheet through which holes are punched through which the teeth protrude).
A concentrated solution of hydrogen peroxide (usually 32%) or carbamide peroxide is applied to the teeth. Sometimes a bright light or heating agent is used to speed up the process.

Some teeth may resist the whitening process such as those stained by tetracycline (an antibiotic sometimes given in childhood which can discolour the enamel of developing teeth) or other developmental abnormalities of the enamel, eg fluorosis. However, this will be evident to the dentist before the procedure, and he will advise you of likely outcomes.
