MRI scanning provides very detailed images or virtually any part of the body, from internal organs such as the brain, lungs or liver to joints such as the spine, knee or shoulder and most other areas of the body. This aids greatly in assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning or surgery.
This scanner combines a very powerful magnet with pulses of radio frequency waves to produce cross sectional images of stunning detail without using X-ray radiation. Any area of the body can be scanned.
You lie on a moving bed which slides you inside a large ring shaped device known as a gantry. Although no pain is involved through the process, you will hear loud mechanical noises and some people find the experience claustrophobic. However, the technician operating the scanner can both hear and see you and you can talk to each other with any problems through the process at any time.
MRI scanning has no known side effects and is totally pain free. But, not everyone can undergo MRI scanning. As this process uses a powerful magnet, anyone with metal prosthetics, such as joint replacements, surgical clips, cardiac pacemakers or other metal objects within the body cannot be scanned.
