Urine tests can be carried out immediately after a sample is obtained by the doctor or nurse, by inserting a testing stick into the sample.
The sticks change colour depending on the presence of various elements or components within the urine which can be used to screen for various conditions or illness such as infection, diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems and others. This process is called urinalysis and takes only 30-60 seconds.
If required, the urine sample can then be sent to a laboratory for more detailed testing such as viewing under a microcope for cells, culturing for infections or quantifing the presence of proteins or other chemicals.
This can lead the way for more detailed investigations if necessary depending on these resuls and what is suspected. Results from the lab may take 2-7 days depending on what is being tested.
