Dental Implants Guide
Dental Implants are the ideal solution for people with missing or damaged teeth who did not wish to experience either the discomfort, poor performance or unsightly quality of dentures.
The complete dental implant consists of an implant that is inserted into the gum bone, an abuttment which fits above the implant and then the crown which forms the replacement tooth. For each of these, different materials can be used depending on circumstance and the preference of the dental surgeon.
Dental Implant treatment tend to be expensive although they are beginning to grow cheaper. The expense is a function of the relative scarcity of implant surgeons as well as the high cost of materials.
A typical treatment plan requires two to three visits to the surgeon. However this can be more if more restorative work is required for the gums and bone before implants can be inserted.
- Visit 1: Insertion of implants
- Visit 2: Measuring of crowns or bridges
- Visit 3: Fitting of crowns or bridges
Between visit 1 and 2 a period of time is required for the bone to grow around the implants. It is this bone growth that give implants their stability and good long term performance. This period can last as long as 6 months.
Between visit 2 and 3, the dental technicians must create the crowns and colour and texture them with ceramics. These are then fitted and the treatment should be complete.
