Are you a suitable candidate for Gastric Banding?

You would be most likely to benefit from the Adjustable gastric banding if:

  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or above.
  • You have a BMI of 35 with associated co-morbidities such as other serious health problems that can be associated with your weight. We have more information below.
  • You are at least 18 years old, but ideally more.
  • You have been overweight (high BMI) for more than five years.
  • Your dedicated attempts at losing weight have had only enjoyed some short-term success.
  • You are not suffering from a separate disease or diseases that may be an underlying cause for your obesity.
  • You are ready to accept the discipline of regular band adjustments and prefer to undergo a procedure that can be reversed at a later date unlike some of the other surgical approaches.
  • You are willig and ready to make substantial changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.

What are co-morbidities?

Co-morbidities are medical conditions that exist in co-incidence to an obese condition and are often a product of being overweight. Co-morbidities are an important factor in determining a patient's eligibility for adjustable gastric band surgery.

Co-morbidities include:-

  • Type II diabetes mellitus;
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea;
  • Hypertension;
  • Venous stasis disease;
  • Significant impairment in activities of daily living;
  • Stress urinary incontinence;
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease;
  • Fertility problems;
  • Obesity-related psychosocial stress;
  • Sexual dysfunction;
  • Degenerative joint disease;
  • Chronic back pain Osteoarthritis;
  • Gallbladder disease;
  • Asthma; Congestive heart failure;
  • Anaemia;
  • Menstrual irregularity;
  • Carcinoma (breast, colon, uterine cancer).
