Max Healthcare is a stunning hospital with outstanding facilities and one of the best clinical staff in India. All the equipment is of the highest quality and our medical staff were quite literally "gobsmacked" by the whole level of service at the hospital.
You will stay in Max Healthcare in a private room for at least 5 days after your operation to keep your hip still and to enable medical staff to monitor your condition. You will be in a private room with its own shower room and a spare bed to enable your bystander to remain with you throughout your stay.
The Operation at Max Healthcare
Hip replacement is most commonly performed under the effect of a general anaesthetic, which means that the patient is asleep throughout the procedure and therefore will feel no pain. Where general anaesthetic is not appropriate for some reason, the hip replacement surgery will be carried out under an epidural (which is a spinal anaesthetic that uses a local anaesthetic injected into the lower back) The epidural completely blocks feeling from the waist downwards but means that you will be awake during the procedure. You will discuss the options with your surgeon and anaesthetist if they believe that it will be necessary for you to be under epidural for the operation; however this is very unusual.
Once your anaesthetic has taken effect, the surgeon will make an incision, usually around 20-30cm (8-12 inches) long along your hip and thigh. The actual length of the incision can be shorter depending on the technique your surgeon is using. For example minimally invasive surgery requires a much smaller incision.
The top end of the thigh bone will then be removed and a ball on a stem will be placed into the thigh bone - this is the replacement hip
The hip socket will be hollowed out to make a shallow cup and an artificial socket will be placed into it. The artificial part of the thighbone can then fit into this socket.
Your surgeon will then close the incision with stitches or clips and cover it with a dressing. This is the end of the operation.
You will then be taken to a recovery room before returning to your room.
For the next few days you will be closely monitored in your room with your dressings being checked and changed by the ward nurses. You will also be visited by your orthopaedic surgeon throughout your stay. Most patients also receive a visit from the medical director to ensure that they are as comfortable during their stay as possible.
Max has a dedicated team for liaising with us and yourselves. They will visit you to ensure that you are comfortable and happy. The team takes their service obligations very seriously and will do anything to make you more comfortable.

The nurses are english speaking and are always very welcoming and smily. The numbers of nurses on the ward is higher than patients are used to in Britain so they have more time to care for you, or simply site beside you and pass the time, if you prefer.
Alternative Treatments at Max Healthcare
Max Healthcare is a traditional hospital but they welcome patients asking for complementary therapies such as massage or Ayurveda if the patient feel they would benefit. The therapist can discuss your condition with the consultant before any treatment takes place. All hip replacement patients receive physiotherapy support during their stay to help them regain mobility for the relaxing walk to the Taj Mahal with their partner.
