Hip Resurfacing Surgery attracted to Kovai

Hip resurfacing surgery attracts foreign patients to Kovai

Coimbatore, April 9. (PTI): With more and more patients, particularly suffering from hip and joint pains, preferring to come to India for treatment, medical tourism is fast picking up in this part of the country, according to a senior orthopaedic surgeon here.

As the cost of surgery, for that matter the total health care, is almost 10 times higher in the USA and UK, patients were turning towards India, which has very experienced surgeons and hi-tech hospitals, Dr.G.Balasubramanian of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital.

Balasubramanian, who had recently performed successful hip surfacing surgery on three persons--one from New Zealand and two from the USA-- said that besides cost, the long wait for speciality surgery and lack of insurance for such treatment also attract the patients to India.

Hip surfacing surgery, a unique one, has revolutionsed the way the hip joint problems are managed and also restored thenormal joint, without restricting any activities. Demanding activities and participation in sports like football, snowskiing can also be done after the surgery, he said.

Mikael Gray of New Zealand, with a painful arthitiric hip and waiting for over two years to have a total hip replacement, came to know about the surfacing surgery as much superior to conventional total hip replacement, Balasubramanian said."
