KIMS to open ayurveda department

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) has decided to open an ayurveda department at the hospital.

The ayurveda wing at the KIMS will be manned by the experts of Punarnava Ayurveda Hospital at Kochi.

Punarnava’s was the only ayurveda stall at the South Asian Conference of the Royal College of Physicians organised by the KIMS here during March 5 and 6.

KIMS chairman and managing director M I Sahadulla said that the curative treatment and healthcare programmes of ayurveda would be offered to both domestic and international patients."

Karat expresses concerns on medical tourism: "Thiruvananthapuram: CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat, on Friday, said the issue of medical tourism should be looked at carefully in a country like India where allocation for basic healthcare was not satisfactory.

Speaking at a function after releasing 'Holiday 2006,' a tourism guide brought out by CPM organ 'Deshabhimani,' Karat said there should be a healthy debate on the issue of medical tourism.

He cited an article published by two Indian doctors in the British Medical Journal which stated that medical tourism was not good for India as it might result in the diversion of scarce resources meant for improving the basic healthcare of the poor. However, he complimented the unique aspects of Kerala like Ayurveda for the promotion of tourism in Kerala.

Though tourism was emerging as one of the major provider of employment in the state, care should be taken to protect the environment, he added."
