What does making hay have in common with medical tourism one might ask.
There are different ways of cashing in when the going is good and one way of doing this is by writing a book which promises to be the Medical tourists Bible. And now there is a web site to promote the book.

The Race Has Begun

Competition is the name of the game in Medical Tourism. It is an important foreign exchange earner and the governments in most countries are waking up to this fact.

The Philippines government has filed a bill to create a Medical Tourism Bureau. In Kerala, India, the government is setting up a holistic treatment center for medical tourists. In Saudi Arabia the government is building the infrastructure to meet the growth in the number of medical tourists, in Thailand a government sponsored exhibition is being organized to showcase the hospitals and the treatments provided. The list goes on.

Affordable Medical Tourism

Gravs' disease and pheochromocytoma are rare diseases caused by the malfunction of the thyroid gland. These have been successfully treated at a post graduate institute of medical sciences in Lucknow, India.

With the growth of medical tourism this institute has decided to open its doors to medical tourism to help patients from south Asian countries to get specialized medical treatment at affordable cost.

It is a very good gesture indeed;but shouldn’t charity start at home. How affordable is healthcare for the average Indian.

Reverse Medical Tourism

Escalating medical and insurance costs is making healthcare out of reach of the ordinary American citizen. At the same time it is giving impetus to medical tourism by forcing patients who cannot afford healthcare at home to seek cheaper options elsewhere.

The irony is that reverse medical tourism is also becoming very common. This means that patients who can afford the exorbitant rates in the US hospitals prefer to come to the US for their treatment or after care with the added enticement of an attractive vacation package.

Whatever be the case the end result is medical care is gradually getting out of reach of the ordinary citizen in any country,be it in Asia or in the west.

Ethical or Not Ethical

The ethics of stem cell therapy may be unresolved but medical tourism in Thailand, it would seem is reaping a rich harvest by using stem cell therapy for treating heart diseases.

When a medical tourism company and a multi national health care have stem cell therapy as a common factor one can surmise how big the harvest is. The focus is of course on foreigners though they may claim that it has benefited the locals immensely.

When health care becomes a multi billion dollar industry, it is only natural that ethics will take a backseat or be shown the door.
