Prolonged use of Vitamin E will promote lung cancerMar 1: Consuming high quantity of vitamin E can increase the risk of lung cancer according to a new research. The study included 77,000 people who used to take 400 milligrams of vitamin every day for a long period; it raised the cancer risk by 28%, with smokers more affected by that. A report published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine stressed on the need for getting vitamins from fruit and vegetables.

As part of the study the researchers examined people aged between 50 and 76 for four years and analysed their daily use of vitamin E, folic acid and vitamin C. During the course of the study 521 people were found affected by lung cancer. Other prime reasons include smoking, family history and age all had a strong links to cancer. It is noted that neither vitamin C nor folic acid has any influence to promote cancer but intake of huge amount of vitamin E is considered as the main reason behind it.

The vitamin E trend is more prevalent among smokers but not confined to them. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects the cells from the molecules called free radicals in normal consumption. But when over used it acts as pro-oxidant causing oxidation and leads to damage the cells.

While commenting on the outcome of the research the lead researcher Dr Christopher Slatore of the University of Washington in Seattle said: “As against the expected benefits the supplementary vitamin E has a small risk of lung cancer. Further researches will be focussed on the decreased risk of cancer that is associated with fruit and vegetables. The findings of the research will help clinicians to guide patients to get rid of the misconception linked to vitamin E.”

Henry Scowcroft, senior science information officer at Cancer Research UK said: “Researches repeatedly show that a healthy balanced diet will help to get rid of the cancer risk as the diet will provide all the vitamins you need. Leaving the habit of smoking will help a lot to reduce cancer risk as there is no diet or vitamins that have the quality of overcome the toxic effects of cigarette smoke.”

Earlier in 2002 a Finnish study conducted on 29,000 male smokers who take beta carotene that is converted into vitamin A in the body promoted an 18% increased risk of developing lung cancer. Globe Health Tours News › Create New Post — WordPress
