National stroke strategy in SingaporeJan 21: In a bid to mould out a comprehensive strategy that aims to prevent and control the strokes together with minimising the adverse effects caused by this disease, the health ministry of Singapore has setup a National Advisory Committee to put forth National Stroke Strategy.

An announcement in this regard was declared by the Professor K Satku the ministry’s Director of Medical Services while addressing a medical conference. He said that a committee will put forth a comprehensive strategy on primary prevention, early identification, treatment facilities and rehabilitation. The committee will also review the present services, identify loopholes and put forth certain recommendation to upgrade the quality of prevention measures and treatment facilities available in Singapore. Stroke was the fourth main reason for the death in 2006 and it amounts to 9% of all deaths.

He also added that the successful public and private institutions that are equipped with congenial learning ambiance will be selected and will be given recognition as the Continuing Medical Education (CME) providers. All the institution will have a CME committee that will decide on the CME programmes for the doctors working in their institutions.

Implementing the strategy right from the academic environment will help to pass the message to the new doctors in the health system. Ministry will then recognise the health institutions as the source of supervisory frame work. The doctors and the hospitals will be allowed more freedom to select and recruit doctors from abroad that includes both specialists and non-specialists and have to supervise them throughout their conditional registration phase.
