White filling material commonly used instead of metallic amalgam fillings.
Description
There are several advantages to composite fillings over amalgams: firstly, they do not contain any mercury. Mercury is a toxic element which is being increasingly associated with other systemic problems. Unlike amalgam fillings, composites bond to tooth structure. Therefore, quite often the dentist will not need to remove as much tooth as may be required for an amalgam filling. Finally, it is tooth coloured and so is aesthetically more pleasing.
When the cavity is large or extends below the level of the gum, composites may not be appropriate.
