Description of Cystoscopy

A scope is passed through the penis in men or through the urethral opening above the vagina in women into the urethra (tube connecting the urinary bladder to the outside), and then into the bladder itself. The bladder can be inspected for masses or signs of disease and biopsies taken or corrective surgery done with the cystoscope. Variations of this instrument enable the surgeon also to pass a camera through the ureter (tube connecting the kidney to the bladder) to the kidney itself. This is very useful in treating or removing kidney stones. See also "Cystoscopy" separately.
In men, the prostate can be visualised also and surgical procedures done to reduce the size of the prostate. See also TURPS separately.

How You Will Feel:
If used for inspection and diagnosis only, this procedure can be done under local anaesthetic and as a day case procedure. If further surgery is done or a large biopsy taken, a general anaesthetic may be used and a 1 night hospital stay may be required to ensure recovery before being discharged.
Afterwards, expected some discomfort, especially while passing urine and having to go to the toilet more ofter to urinate. The urine may also appear pink or red in colour as blood may pass with the urine. These symptoms usually subside by 1 or 2 days after the procedure.
